Creative DIY uses for Altoids tins

Learn fun, new and creative DIY uses for Altoids tins.

In writing my Actual Magic series for Young Adults, I drew upon all my favorite story characters I loved as a kid to create my own. I love those little Altoids tins, but once they are empty, what are you supposed to do with them? Well, here’s one idea!

Here’s an excerpt: Studying the stacks of Altoids boxes lining the drawer, she selected a cinnamon tin in which to store the wish doll of her next victim. From an envelope tucked in the corner, she retrieved a small black binder clip, and then slammed the drawer shut.

She patted her pocket, felt what she was looking for, and removed the dark chocolate Altoids box containing her Randolph wish doll. Opening the small metal box, she admired her handiwork.

Randolph was very handsome. The doll she’d crafted in his likeness didn’t really do his good looks justice. The doll was definitely missing something.

Ah, yes — a personality.

She removed the doll from its portable breath mint coffin and firmly attached the binder clip to its head.

Randolph howled from inside his box under the bed.

“Sweetheart, you know I don’t like to be glared at,” she shouted at the doll. “The next time I open your lid, I expect you to greet me with a kiss and a loving smile.” With her finger, she flicked the top of the doll’s head.

Randolph howled again.

“Well then, make sure I see that handsome smile of yours the next time I open your box.”

She drew in a deep breath before letting out a long, tortured sigh. “Honestly, Randolph, you can be so ungrateful sometimes. You always think of yourself and that selfish, bratty kid of yours before you think about me.”

She flicked the doll on the top of its head once more for good measure, put it back in the Altoids box, and then snapped the lid closed.

She could hear Randolph beneath the bed moaning in agony.

Replacing the box to the pocket of her bathrobe, she added angrily, “I’ve had enough!” but really, she was just getting bored.
