5.0 out of 5 stars ... feeling I was left with upon completion of this wonderfully imaginative journey, July 9, 2014

"More" is the pervasive feeling I was left with upon completion of this wonderfully imaginative journey. Originally," Lilly" is a present I intended to give my Godchild for her eighth grade graduation. Unfortunately, after deciding to take a quick peak at the book, I was hooked. Even though I read the page turner in just four days, I had to label the book as "re-gifted and belated" when I handed it to my Godchild. What I loved most about the book is how, like a playbill you get when you go to the theater, in the first chapter, Deb Mc Tiernan introduces you to all of the main characters; as well as teases you about the plot ahead. So as a reader, from the beginning I was engaged, relaxed and ready to experience the story as it unfolded. And, unfold it did! Before I knew it, the journey was over. On a serious note, Deborah magnificently helps her readers become aware of the importance of truth, how lying isn't right, is detectable and 'smells funny'. I believe Mc Tiernan's subtle, yet powerful message, gives young readers, as well as the rest of us, pause. Additionally, the insights into loyalty, friendship, adventure, and let us not forget budding romance, are handled with delicacy and enticement. I can't tell you which character is my favorite. They all have their strong points, which are wonderfully rooted in every day frailties anyone can relate to. As for the step mother, and her story line ... Well you just have to read it to know what deceit, and ugliness of betrayal looks like. She is a dynamic contrast to Lilly, who uses her wits and intuitive insight to uncover the mystery of her mothers death. Was her step mother involved, or not? As I said, I want 'more'. Like, "What's with the red dress at the end of the story?" Fortunately, I hear there is more to come. Can't wait.

Do yourself a favor - for the price of a movie ticket and popcorn, buy this book! From the first chapter of Lily Noble and Actual Magic, I was hooked! Fabulous lyrical writing (and I’m picky!) and a GREAT story too! I adore the time McTiernan takes with character development, a skill often adrift in other young adult fiction. Also, the way she moves among the different character’s stories is very well balanced, so that we don’t lose touch with any one character for very long. An elegant skill to posses as a writer. I highly recommend it!
